Healthwords weight loss plan with Wegovy - How it works

Written by healthwords.ai's team of doctors and pharmacists based in UK | Updated: 02 Oct 2023 | 4 min read

Calorie restriction and increased physical activity may result in weight loss. However, this weight loss can result in a change in appetite hormones, making it difficult to maintain the weight loss.

Your brain receives signals from all across your body. Some of these signals are called appetite hormones, and they aid in regulating how much food you take in by causing you to feel hungry or feel full and satisfied.  Wegovy® mimics the effects of one of these naturally occurring hormones, resulting in reduced hunger, leading to decreased calorie intake and subsequent weight loss.

Wegovy for weight loss can be used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet and regular exercise to achieve optimal results.

Getting to know the Wegovy pen and how to use it

(IMAGE OF WEGOVY PEN)

Wegovy is injected under the skin once a week with or without food. You should try to use it at the same time each week.

Each Wegovy pen has 4 doses and lasts for 4 weeks of treatment. Then, you'll need to start a new pen.

How to use

Always read the Wegovy patient information leaflet for full instructions, diagrams and any additional doctor advice.

These summary instructions are a general guide and do not replace reading the full information in your leaflet.

  • Always start by checking your pen label to make sure that it contains your prescribed dose of wegovy.
  • Your pen is designed to be used with NovoFine Plus, NovoFine or NovoTwist disposable needles up to a length of 8 mm included in the pack along with the pen.
  • Remove the cap and check the liquid is clear and colourless.
  • Attach and secure a new needle to the pen - always use a new needle each week.
  • Ensure that your pen displays the correct dose as per your prescription by turning the dose selector. For example, 0.25mg, or 0.5mg etc.
  • Choose your skin injection site - it is ideal to rotate the site each week, such as opposite sides of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arms.
  • Inject the needle into the skin flush against your body. You should be able to see the pen’s window. Press and hold the dose button and slowly count to 6 until the dose counter resets to “0”.
  • Remove the needle and carefully replace the needle cap.
  • Unscrew the needle and dispose of it in a sharps bin.
  • If there are still doses left in your pen, place the cap back on and safely store for future use. If there are no doses left, dispose of the pen.

Dosing schedule - a summary

(DOSE ESCALATION IMAGE)

Wegovy ® comes in 5 different dose strengths. You start Wegovy® at a dose of 0.25 mg once a week and increase

the dose every 4 weeks until you reach the full dose of 2.4 mg. It’s important to follow the dosing schedule as recommended by your healthcare provider.

Wegovy dosage schedule

  • weeks 1-4: 0.25mg once a week
  • weeks 5-8: 0.5mg once a week
  • weeks 9-12: 1mg once a week
  • weeks 13-16: 1.7mg once a week
  • weeks 17 onwards: you will increase up to the maximum dose 2.4mg once a week as the maintenance dose.

In some cases, your prescriber may escalate the dosage more slowly depending on your individual progress.

Some important reminders:
