Alka-Seltzer Plus Severe Cold combines the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) aspirin with the antihistamine chlorpheniramine and the decongestant phenylephrine to provide fast relief of nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, headache, body aches, and sinus pressure.

Dosage instructions

Adults and children 12 years and over: take 2 tablets fully dissolved in 4 oz of water every 4 hours. Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours or as directed by a doctor. 

Ingredients

Active Ingredients: Aspirin (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) - 325 mg (Pain reliever/fever reducer), Chlorpheniramine Maleate - 2 mg (Antihistamine), Phenylephrine Bitartrate - 7.8 mg (Nasal decongestant). Each tablet contains potassium 78 mg and sodium 356 mg.

Inactive Ingredients: anhydrous citric acid, calcium silicate, dimethicone, flavors, mannitol, potassium bicarbonate, povidone, sodium bicarbonate, sucralose.

Warnings and Restrictions

Read all product packaging and labels carefully prior to use.

• Do not give to children or teenagers recovering from chicken pox or flu-like symptoms because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome.

• Aspirin may cause severe allergic reaction.

• NSAIDs may cause stomach bleeding, particularly in those over 60 years of age, those who have had stomach problems, are taking a blood thinner or a steroid, taking other NSAIDs, or are taking more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day.

• Sore throat warning: If sore throat is severe, persists for more than 2 days, is accompanied or followed by fever, headache, rash, nausea, or vomiting, consult a doctor promptly.

• Do not use if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.

• Ask a doctor before using if you have had stomach problems, have high blood pressure, heart disease, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, are taking a diuretic, have asthma, diabetes, thyroid disease, glaucoma, difficulty in urination due to an enlarged prostate, have breathing problems, or are on a sodium-restricted diet, taking a prescription for gout, diabetes or arthritis, or taking sedatives or tranquilizers.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use. Do not use after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
