A day in the life of Dr Karen Martin

My morning routine

My morning routine is simple. I start out with 2 cups of plain black coffee. I quickly read through email, noting which ones I need to respond to. I check websites for the latest news and focus on any items that are healthcare related. I’m more likely to exercise in the morning, so I make it a priority. Plus, after my shower, I feel energized to take on the rest of the day!

My health hacks

I only eat between 12 noon and 8 pm (intermittent fasting). Once 8 pm rolls around it means I’m done for the day, and I brush my teeth.

My bedtime routine is crucial for ensuring that I get enough shuteye. I limit screen time in the evening, I keep my bedroom cool, and once in bed I listen to a meditation or sleep story to help me drift off.

I swear by crossword puzzles to keep me mentally sharp. I also enjoy reading, particularly biographies.

What I like to eat

I adore fruits and vegetables, and I make sure my kitchen is stocked with a colorful variety, as well as wholegrain items that I can grab for a healthy snack. Low fat dairy is another go-to option. Lean meat, poultry, and seafood are the cornerstones of healthy lunches and dinners. I do treat myself to low-fat ice cream on occasion.

What I avoid eating

I try to avoid sugar. I have found that if I don’t eat it for a few days, I no longer crave it.

Instead of frying foods in oil I now use the air fryer.

My exercise plan

I exercise almost every day. My preference is to walk outdoors, and I have a well-traveled 3-mile route. If the weather is bad, I have a stair stepper in the basement. Additionally, I do yoga twice a week.

My skincare routine

Washing my face with a non-soap cleanser has become an important part of my daily routine. This is followed by a moisturizer specifically formulated for the face. Then I use a different type of moisturizer for the rest of my body.

If I am going to be outside, I make sure to wear sunscreen, even in winter. I also use lip balm with sunscreen.

My go-to health products

My homemade first aid kit includes gloves, instant cold pack, diphenhydramine, topical antibiotics, ibuprofen, antiseptic wipes, gauze, tape, and bandages.

I also keep nasal steroids on hand for allergy season.

I take vitamin D daily, particularly since I live in the northern US where the winters are long and it’s sometimes difficult to get outdoors.

My typical gym session

I lift weights twice a week in my basement for about 20 minutes. The routine works out all large muscles in the body and consists of 12 lifts with 15 reps each.

My hydration fix

I keep a 16-ounce tumbler filled with water out on my kitchen counter during the day. This reminds me to drink every time I pass by. I aim to fill it up three more times so that I meet my goal of 8 glasses of water per day.

My 3 top wellness tips

  1. Schedule and maintain all routine screenings and check-ups.
  2. Keep your medications in a weekly pill organizer so that you don’t forget to take them, and you know when to reorder.
  3. Obtain all the recommended vaccinations for your age.
